As many people know Jake had his tonsils (and adenoids) taken out on Friday. We let him know that his throat was going to hurt after but we told him that he would get to eat lots of ice cream and popsicles.

Well, Friday morning at 9:15 we got to the surgical center where we got Jake checked in. He was fine until they took us back to get him ready for the operation. We forgot the camera so we didn’t get any pictures to put up but we did get some pictures on our cell phones of Jake in his “hospital clothes”. They looked quite comfortable.

Once they got him all ready, they told him he could watch some TV until they were ready to take him to the operating room. He started to ask us if we could come back another time to get his tonsils out. Of course we told him no. The gave him some medicine that would help with anxiety. As many of you know, Jake gets very anxious about new things.

Emily and I waited out in the waiting room for about 30 minutes when they pulled us back to get us in place so we would be there when Jake came out of recovery. After another 15 minutes or so, they wheeled a crying little boy into our area. I could hear him coming as they brought him. He was not a happy camper. He kept crying and telling us his throat hurt. We kept trying to tell him that if he stopped crying it would help his throat not hurt so much. That didn’t help. Emily got up on the bed with him and held him and eventually he calmed down. After a does of pain killers of course.

Jake eventually Jake fell asleep but they would not let him go home. Whenever Jake ends up in the hospital he has a problem with his oxygen levels. His oxygen level kept dropping and they told us it had to stay above a certain number for 20 minutes before we could go. Eventually they had Emily hold an oxygen mask by his face for 30 minutes. Then they tried to see if he could do it on his own for 20 minutes. Luckily it stayed up and we were able to take him home.

Well, Jake has been doing quite well. When he has his pain killers in him you would never know he had his tonsils out. He talks just as much as he always has. However, when the pain killers wear off, he gets really upset. He hates his pain killers because it doesn’t taste good. So to get him to take it, Emily and I usually have to do it together.

The past two nights he has watched the movie Cars on our bedroom ceiling with our projector. He is going to be sad tomorrow night when we move him back to his room.

The lesson Jake has learned from this is that he never wants to have surgery again.

Oh, about the title of this post. When the nurse asked if Jake was getting his tonsils out, Jake responded. “And my adenoids too.” It was pretty funny.

So Dan is insisting that I learn to write in the family blog, so here I am. He is totally patronizing me so I suggest to anyone out there who doesn’t know how to blog, don’t have a computer scientist teach you. But now Dan is encouraging me to change the title of my blog entry to something else since I am not talking about the soccer practice and as I don’t know how or want to change the title I guess I had better start talking about Jake’s (and Dan’s) first soccer practice.

Jake had his first soccer practice yesterday and as his soccer coach is in our ward, Dan got suckered into being the assistant coach. The best part of Jake’s team is that the coaches’ daughter choose the color of the teams uniforms and they are a very manly "salmon." But I think that Dan and Jake are man enough to pull of the look but I guess you can all decide for yourself.

Jake is really excited about playing soccer especially since his friend Maddox is on his team. Their first practice went well. They did one activity where all of the kids had to hold hands and then for the rest of the practice the kids thought that they had to hold hands no matter how their coaches tried to dissuade them. They all had a lot of fun out there never mind the fact that they didn’t know which goal they were supposed to score in and continued kicking the ball regardless of the fact that it was way out of bounds. But all in all it went well and Jake is excited to have his dad as a coach.

So I will conclude my blog post here and hopefully it will be satisfactory to my computer scientist husband.

Today Jake turned 5. It’s only 8:00AM and he is already having an awesome birthday. We started the morning off by opening presents. His biggest gift was his new bike. You can see him sitting on it in the picture. He is really excited because the bike is yellow and yellow is his favorite color. It took him a minute to figure out how to get on the bike because it is a little bigger then he is used to but he was able to do it. Now he can’t wait to get outside and take it for a spin.

Other gifts that Jake received were some clothes (of course). It was time for some new Sunday clothes. The tie Emily bought him is yellow so he was excited about that. He also received some new toy airplanes. Jake and Andrew are really into airplanes so they have been flying the planes around the house. Lastly Jake got a chalk sprayer. So now he can paint the sidewalks with chalk even faster then before.

Jake is getting really excited that he gets to start school this year. I’m sure he it will be quite an experience for him. He has been waiting to turn five for some time now and now the day has finally come. He talks about how he is going to go to Westside Elementary this year.

Don’t forget to leave a comment and wish Jake a HAPPY BIRTHDAY. Jake likes to receive messages on the computer.

Since we moved to Springville and didn’t find out about soccer sign ups until is was too late this fall, we signed Jake up for indoor soccer this winter. He has had a lot of fun! The first time we signed him up for soccer in Provo he was not really interested. However, this past fall when we told him that he could do swim lessons instead he insisted on doing soccer. We were a little worried at first that he still would not get out and play much but he quickly helped those worries disappear.

Yesterday we learned the trick to get him to focus more on the ball instead of focusing on talking to the other kids and coaches. Emily started telling him, “Jake! Go steal the ball.” Instantly Jake would take off and try to get the ball. At times he couldn’t figure out why the other kids wouldn’t let him steal the ball. We had to tell him that they don’t want him to steal the ball but that he should do it anyways. Now the fun part is teaching him when stealing is appropriate.

Jake has had two games so far and both have resulted in wins. They don’t really keep score but as I told Emily, dads are really good at keeping score. It’s what dads are good for. I don’t know if she believed me but at yesterday’s game I heard other dads from Jake’s team talk about the score from the last game and how the team won.

It has definitely been a lot of fun to see Jake get into soccer. I hope you all enjoy the pictures that are included in this post!
