Surgery Complete

Posted by danolsen  Published in Dan

After years of talking about getting my tonsils out it finally happened. I am looking forward to a more happy and healthy life.

The surgery didn’t quite go according to plan. I was supposed to go home the same day. However, my time in the recovery room was not too smooth. My left arm ended up have spasms for a while. On top of that I was slow to come out of the anesthesia. Because of this, I ended up having to stay the night in the hospital. In the end I got home last night around 5:00.

When I am on pain killers I feel pretty good. However, when they start to wear off it hurts to think about talking.

Thanks to everyone for your phone calls and support.

If this blog post seems a little odd it is because I am currently on pain killers while writing this.

Ankle Update

Posted by danolsen  Published in Dan

I had a follow up appointment today. The ankle is still very swollen. They found I tore the ligament completely. They put me in a boot for at least the next two weeks. They also have the exercises I am supposed to do. Fun times!

Where is the Fountain of Youth?

The bones in the foot

Image via Wikipedia

So this year I have decided to get back in decent shape (physically). So, I have working out on the elliptical machine and I have started playing basketball again. Well, for some reason my basketball skills and my physical abilities aren’t what they used to be in my glory days of high school.

I was playing basketball this past Thursday at the church. I had been enjoying the past couple weeks of playing basketball with out feeling like I was going to pass out after 5 minutes of playing. Well, we were in the middle of a game and I was going for the ball that was about to go out of bounds. As I reached for it my ankle started to roll. I tried to let up before it went too far but it was too late. It continued to roll under and then there was a loud pop. Boy did it hurt! Once the guys scraped me off the floor they brought in a big pot of ice and water. I sat and watched them finish playing.

Well, one of the guys helped me get into the house when I got home. There was no way I was going to try going up the stairs. So I stayed on the love seat in the living room. I figured at some point Emily would come down to find out why I hadn’t come up to bed. I got home at 11pm and come midnight Emily hadn’t come out and I drifted off to sleep. At about 2am I woke up in pain and needed to go to the bathroom. At about 2:30 I crawled up the stairs to go to the bathroom. I pulled myself into bed and that’s when Emily finally work up. She looked at the clock and wondered why I was getting to bed so late. I told her I hurt my ankle and she decided she wanted to look at my ankle. She looked at it and immediately called her brother Jeff and asked him to come get me and take me to the ER. I had no say in it.

Well, after two hours in the ER they let me go. Luckily no bones were broken but I have at least partially torn a ligament in my foot. The doctor told me to stay off it and keep my foot elevated. So, today was the first time up and about in order to go to church. Thank goodness for pain killers because after my bath this morning I was in a lot of pain.

So, what lesson have a learned? I need to play more basketball to get to the point where my body won’t fall apart when I play.

Jake’s (and Dan’s) first soccer practice

So Dan is insisting that I learn to write in the family blog, so here I am.  He is totally patronizing me so I suggest to anyone out there who doesn’t know how to blog, don’t have a computer scientist teach you.  But now Dan is encouraging me to change the title of my blog entry to something else since I am not talking about the soccer practice and as I don’t know how or want to change the title I guess I had better start talking about Jake’s (and Dan’s) first soccer practice.

Jake had his first soccer practice yesterday and as his soccer coach is in our ward, Dan got suckered into being the assistant coach.  The best part of Jake’s team is that the coaches’ daughter choose the color of the teams uniforms and they are a very manly "salmon."  But I think that Dan and Jake are man enough to pull of the look but I guess you can all decide for yourself.

Jake is really excited about playing soccer especially since his friend Maddox is on his team. Their first practice went well.  They did one activityIMG_2736 where all of the kids had to hold hands and then for the rest of the practice the kids thought that they had to hold hands no matter how their coaches tried to dissuade them.  They all had a lot of fun out there never mind the fact that they didn’t know which goal they were supposed to score in and continued kicking the ball regardless of the fact that it was way out of bounds.  But all in all it went well and Jake is excited to have his dad as a coach.

So I will conclude my blog post here and hopefully it will be satisfactory to my computer scientist husband.

Dan’s Awesome Birthday Gift

Posted by danolsen  Published in Dan

IMG_2469 Okay, so I know that my birthday was over a month ago but that just shows how bad we are at updating our blog. The reason I decided to back track was because Emily took pictures for this blog post so I might as well post and use those pictures.

So, for my birthday Emily wasn’t sure what to get me so we talked about it. IMG_2465She thought it would be nice to have a grill so we could have BBQs. Well, after more discussion and realizing I would need something to grill my birthday steaks on we went to Home Depot and bought at grill. We have had quite a few BBQs since we bought the grill. We like having our meet cooked with fire. Often times when we have meat for dinner I will go out and cook it on the grill. As you can see from the pictures the grill is a well loved gift.

Another Chapter Coming to an End

Posted by danolsen  Published in Dan

On Tuesday I finally defended my thesis. Yup, that’s right. The told me that I “passed with qualifications”. That means I have another revision to do before they finalize my paper work. The extra revision was something I already knew was coming so I wasn’t too surprised by that. It felt good to get the defense over with. Emily is gone for the weekend so it gives me a good opportunity to sit down and pound out that last revision. I have to do something to keep myself busy.

Also, I am switching jobs on March 10th. I have taken a job with the state of Utah. I will become familiar with the busses again but at least the hours will be better. I am sad to leave Omniture because it has been a great place to work (other then the hours) but at the same time I am excited to start a new job without the weight of a thesis hanging over my head.
